Throw out your masters: Risograph printing across North America

Curated by Void Gallery, Throw out your masters will showcase works from a number of Risograph studios across Canada, North America and beyond. Each studio is represented by a single work or small body of works by a professional artist associated with the studio. Void is also working with three local artists (Alani Caruso-Fitterer, Jen Schier, and Isaac Thomas) in the form of mini residencies, teaching them the methods of Risograph printing and resulting in the production of a work by each artist for the exhibition. The works by the selected professional artists (local, national, and international) will be displayed on the gallery walls, while further prints and the ephemera of Risograph materials from each studio will be displayed in a “reading room” in the gallery, available for visitors to look through. Following the exhibition, all Risograph materials will be collected into Void’s archive and made available as inspiration for members.
Print Studios
Slugger
Calgary, AB, Canada
Slugger is the collaborative design and illustration studio of Cam Hoff and Chris Pecora. Since their first collaboration in 2015, they have been focused on making work with an emphasis on fun – examples of which include brightly coloured murals and beer packaging featuring campy heavy metal-themed illustrations rendered with Crayola markers.
Relative

Previously known as Paper Pusher, a publisher and printer of highly considered, small-batch paper goods, Relative is a creative studio delivering goods and guidance for human harmony, translating timeless wisdom traditions into simple products that aim to help people to be happier and healthier.
Authorized to Work in the US
Brooklyn, NY, USA
Authorized to Work in the US emerged from a foreign artist’s struggle for his work authorization in the United States. Cem Kocyildirim, founder Of Authorized To Work In The Us Press, is now a risograph printer and publisher located in Brooklyn, and sells artwork in public gathering spaces from his custom-made Riso Bike.
Parameter Press
Winnipeg, MB, Canada
Parameter Press is a Winnipeg-based print collective that works with artists and arts organizations to produce risograph projects, including Alongside Quarterly, a risograph edition that ranges from a poster to a book, a collection of printed ephemera to paper dolls.
Colour Code
Toronto, ON, Canada
Colour Code is an independent print studio and publishing platform established in 2012 by Jenny Gitman and Jesjit Gill. Together, they publish art zines, comics and print editions with a focus on collaborating with artists, and experimenting with the Risograph. Colour Code is also an artist-friendly printing service and co-organizers of Zine Dream, a small press book fair.
Outlet
Portland, OR, USA
Outlet is the studio space of Kate Bingaman-Burt, an illustrator and Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University. In addition to producing some truly stunning risography, Outlet is part illustration studio, part public design and zine library, part education space, part installation space and part retail space.
BARTR

BARTR is an independent, non profit organisation made up of Budapest-based artists, curators, cultural managers, local businesses and cooperatives that aims to facilitate cross-cultural exchange between visiting and local artists, create opportunities for future cooperation and to provide a supportive, inspiring environment for new experiences within the unique cultural context of Budapest.

A for-hire risograph printing and publishing operation run by Bridget Carey and Brandon Bandy, Riso Hell makes limited edition zines and prints harnessing the awesome colour powers of the riso machine.
Moniker Press
Vancouver, BC, Canada
Moniker Press is a risograph publishing studio that works collaboratively with artists and writers to produce small editions of books, zines and print ephemera. Located in Vancouver, Canada on the unceded territories of thexʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
Void Gallery
is a non-profit screen print and Risograph studio. We support local artists and the local arts community through training, provision of space and equipment, and community-outreach programming. Since opening in 2012, we have worked to create a market for local art that hasn’t found a home in Saskatoon’s gallery system. We focus on art that is accessible to the general public, including t-shirts and posters. Relationships are at the centre of what we do. In particular, we work with members of underserved communities – including Indigenous peoples, newcomers, and youth – to learn from them and improve our operations and programming in response.
Alani Caruso-Fitterer
is a Saskatoon based multi-disiplinary artist in an open-relationship with clay. Alani holds a BFA from NSCAD University where their focus was sculpture, ceramics and indigenous art history. Playing between craft and contemporary art, their practise explores aesthetics of the lunar cycles and water, repetition as ritual, and tools of survival in physical and psychic spaces . Passionate about accessibility and community, Alani has facilitated ceramic workshops and art classes for beginners of all ages. Lune’s Essentials is a line of small batch ceramic jewellery and wares for the home and beyond that she has been producing since moving to the prairies in 2016.
Jen Schier
is a graphic artist with a background in art history. Her recent work explores the female form, often presenting nudes in a vivid and colourful way. Her pieces carry themes of body positivity and self love, sometimes with florals and natural elements tied in.
She is continually honing her illustration skills and exploring various artistic media and techniques. Her current focus is on printmaking and illustration. She works with linocuts, block printing, and printing patterns for paper goods as well as textile design.
Isaac Thomas
is a self taught graphic designer who hails from Kamsack. He is currently living in Shellbrook after a long stint in Saskatoon working a screen printer at Hardpressed. Constantly dabbling in random projects over the years from t-shirt graphics to event posters, he recently started producing work under the monicker “Glad Line Graphic Design.”
