AKA is seeking a student returning to full-time studies in the fall of 2024 to assist with the
realization of a local outreach project, community workshops, and the our summer members studios. Summer students at AKA directly engage with the day-to-day work of the gallery and our dedication to artists, members and publics.
Work at AKA can include a mix of at home and in-office work, we have equipment to support all staff to work on or off site.
As an artist-run centre operating since 1971, we recognize and embrace the fact that artist-run centres educate and train the museum and gallery workers of the future. As many visual arts programs do not offer job skills training, we work to provide students with as much quality hands-on learning as possible. Throughout the years, we have continued to work with our summer students, through exhibitions, special projects, and special contract hires.
The successful candidate will learn and utilize skills such as:
>marketing, including design, social media, press releases, and website updates
>communication with publics, partners, and artists
>hosting publics, artists, and events
>the coordination of event and workshop logistics
>the coordination of artist travel, accommodation, and residencies
>gallery sitting and responsibility for consistent gallery hours
>correspondence with members
These skills are diverse and varied, and beneficial for any future roles in museums, galleries, support service organizations, and in education. The successful candidate will assist with the above duties, and in some cases, where experience allows, be empowered to lead selected tasks. For AKA, this student will build greater community connections and better support our artists. By providing them with the opportunity to become involved in core decision- making, we will benefit from their world views and perspectives, especially in connecting with younger audiences.
AKA's programming regularly includes work with marginalized groups and artists. We work together with numerous non- profit service organizations, particularly those with which we are neighbours in a core neighbourhood in Saskatoon.
The candidate must be:
• a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
• legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
• between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
• a high school, college, CEGEP or university student returning to studies in the fall
