Tragedy Plus Time; I Laughed, I Cried, I Split My Side

CA$20.00

This catalogue documents two exhibitions: Dunlop Art Gallery's Tragedy Plus Time and AKA artist-run's I Laughed, I Cried, I Split My Side. These exhibitions employed different points of view to critically examine the application of humour in the practices of 21 Canadian and international artists and collectives. The artists in I Laughed, I Cried, I Split My Side take up what curator Dagmara Genda calls "the horrible, absurd laugh," riding a tension between humour and horror, while the artists in Tragedy Plus Time consider humour as a coping mechanism or soothing balm, and the notion of humour as "a release in possession of latent malice that appears seemingly benign."

The catalogue features critical essays by Tragedy Plus Time exhibition curators Blair Fornwald, Jennifer Matotek and Wendy Peart, I Laughed, I Cried, I Split My Side curator Dagmara Genda, and guest writer Michael Davidge. It also includes specially commissioned artist projects by Thirza Cuthand, Alison SM Kobayashi, and Walter Scott, and 92 full-colour photographs.

Artists featured include: Sonny Assu, BGL, Kyle Beal, Jason Cawood, Mark Clintberg, Troy Coulterman, Robyn Cumming, Thirza Cuthand, Keren Cytter, Michel de Broin, Kim Dorand, Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby, Erica Eyres, Hannah Jickling and Helen Reed, Alison SM Kobayashi with Christopher Allen, Divya Mehra, Christine Negus, Shanell Papp, Craig Francis Power, Joshua and Zakary Sandler, and Walter Scott
