The Feeling is Dusk is a collection of individual and collaborative works by Maggie Groat and Jimmy Limit presented by AKA Artist-Run at Hybrid Art Fair, in Madrid, Spain from March 7-10, 2024. Situated in the site of a hotel room, works on paper, printed textiles, wheel-thrown ceramics, video installation and an artists book, function as a series of site-specific speculative tools for aiding in human sleep, on the one hand as an act of late-capitalist escape, a refusal or protest in the face of continued demands of hyperproductivity, and on the other hand facilitating the space in which to access dream spaces, the alternate and possible worlds that parallel, push up against, or completely defy our waking ones.

Inspired by a sprawling range of references, including natural oneirogens, wheel-thrown ceramic ASMR YouTube videos, binaural beats, simulation theories, and Jonathan Crary’s text 24/7:Late Capitalism and the Ends of Sleep, this alternative art fair provides the context for the dissemination of associative creative research into this line of spiraling questioning surrounding the multifunctional, otherworldly, and political possibilities of the necessary everyday act of sleep.

Maggie Groat and Jimmy Limit are visual artists who have established individual practices, but who sometimes also collaborate, and in their respective solo efforts, often act as each other's assistant, editor, and critic. The shared concerns in their practice surround image-making and its intersections with objects, lived experiences, and world-building possibilities, as well as the creation of artists' books as an accessible and experimental container for ideas and images. Together they live and work, while raising their three children, on the land between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario, the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek, in the place called Canada.
