Interior Latex Eggshell
March 13 – April 25, 2015
Opening Reception: Friday, March 13, 8pm
For his current exhibition, Robert Taite continues to work with his somewhat strict set of materials associated with painting and interior design (wood, canvas, vinyl, and latex paint). Taite has created an entirely new collection of works specific to AKA artist-run. These new works are guided by tensions between autonomy and dependence, painting and architecture, and, containment and liberation.
Taite seeks to create paintings that generate a sense of illusion or otherworldliness without making images within the traditional rectangular frame. With this extreme resistance toward mark making and a spatial preoccupation Taite skirts around making paintings by any means. The result is a sort of painting installation, where studio-based work is reconfigured in exhibition spaces to promote a play of interaction and fluidity set against certain frictions. Taite’s installation process is extensive with the new and reconfigured site-specific works influenced and acting as a response to architectural spaces.
Robert Taite received a BFA from the University of Manitoba in 2009. Recent solo exhibitions include at Actual Gallery and aceartinc., Winnipeg; L’Oeil de poisson, Quebec City; and Negative Space, Winnipeg. He has held a long-term residency in Quebec. Taite has been the recipient of multiple grants through the Manitoba and Winnipeg Arts Councils and was a finalist for the 16th annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition. He lives and works in Winnipeg and is represented by Lisa Kehler Art + Projects.
