Working across diverse media, Troy Gronsdahl executes his work with a formal restraint and eloquent use of materials. Moved by the erotics of philosophy, the uselessness of poetry, and dumb yearning, his practice investigates divergent ways of knowing and how meaning is formed, unformed, and formed again.
One Once on Which Whatever What is an exhibition of works that includes an ongoing series of photographic monochromes, unfired clay vessels from his project Ways of Listening, and a new artist book. In conjunction with the exhibition, Gronsdahl will debut a two-channel performative video built around a remediated text poem derived from the Susan Sontag essay “The Aesthetics of Silence.”
Troy Gronsdahl is an artist and cultural worker from Saskatoon. Gronsdahl studied at the University of Saskatchewan and holds a master’s degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design where he was the recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal. His research interests include conceptual art practice, expanded notions of performativity, and the political dimension of aesthetic work. Gronsdahl has received a number of awards including grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and Saskatchewan Arts Board. In addition to his visual art practice, he also creates distinctive, genre-bending hip hop music under the moniker soso, touring extensively both nationally and internationally. His artwork has been presented at screenings and exhibitions across Canada.
